Koi Killer, the name emblazoned on the side of one of more than a dozen boats gave the event away. If you missed that, the BOHUNT vehicle licence plate was also a clue.

The 2016 World Koi Carp Classic at Lake Puketirini in Huntly had come to an end, featuring two days of pest control disguised as sport, the distinctive smell of carp and Theo Ryks’ 10.4 kilogram whopper of a grass carp.

“This one here was just shot at the (Lake) Hakanoa. They are very rare,” Ryks said.

While it was the biggest fish of the tournament, it’s only half the size of the 24kg beast he shot a few years ago and it will only win an award for biggest “other” fish. It is a koi carp event, after all.
