2017 ZNA NorCal National Koi Show draws carp enthusiasts.
Koi was the fish of the day at the 2017 ZNA NorCal national show at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in San Jose.
The Saturday gathering drew a crowd of enthusiasts as the decorative carp swam in several large, blue pools. Despite being small, the NorCal chapter of ZNA, the Japanese body that governs the hobby, has garnered support from other clubs in the region and it was able to hold the annual event for the 10th time, according to Don Chamberlain, secretary of the ZNA NorCal chapter.
Three judges from the Netherlands, United Kingdom and Japan were at the event. The koi are evaluated based on factors such as their colors, skin quality, bone structure, tails and gracefulness while swimming. The judges look for a grand champion at first, and then they hand out awards based on size, age and type. For example, there is a baby champion for the younger koi, an adult one for older fish and a mature division for the oldest, Chamberlain said. Honors are also handed out for best in size.
Koi can reach up to a meter long. Chamberlain said raising a koi that large is difficult.
The event continues on Sunday and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the same hotel.
